LCSD Teacher Forum organizes Hurricane Relief Project
Lee County School District’s Teacher Forum launches district-wide Hurricane Relief Project
Bishopville, South Carolina – October 25, 2024 – Lee County School District’s Teacher Forum recently launched their first district-wide community engagement project focused on individuals who were impacted by Hurricane Helene. The impact of Hurricane Helene left many families in neighboring communities and states grappling with loss and uncertainty. The Teacher Forum reached out to staff members, students, parents and community partners with an impassionate plea for support in their Hurricane Helene Relief Project, aimed specifically at aiding those severely affected.
Nonperishable goods, toiletries, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, baby essentials, and flashlights, batteries, shoes, and monetary donations were collected. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, was accepted and appreciated. Donated items were delivered to the United Way in Columbia, South Carolina.
“Unfortunately, we can’t prevent natural disasters like Hurricane Helene from striking; however, our district can show that we care about our neighboring communities and states by participating in community engagement service projects like the Hurricane Helene Relief Project of Hope”, said Bernard McDaniel, Sr., superintendent of Lee County School District. “The involvement of our students hopefully will resonate with them as they advance towards adulthood. I am extremely proud of our Teacher Forum and their efforts in organizing this impactful project. The Teacher Forum members are leaders in our schools and I wholeheartedly support their efforts with this project and look forward to the others they have planned for the future.”
The purpose of the Lee County School District Teacher Forum is to provide recognition for the district and school teachers of the year, to develop teacher leadership among its members, to give a voice in current educational issues at all levels and to impact the professional development of other teachers within the district by encouraging its members to facilitate the development of leadership skills among their peers. The Chairperson of the forum is Mrs. Marlene Mitchell-Golding, 2023-2024 District Teacher of the Year and the Vice-Chairperson is Ms. Karine Dobson, 2024-2025 District Teacher of the Year. Forum members include Ms. Olecia Barnes, Ms. Lashawn Johnson, Mrs. Joycelyn Francis-Chisholm, Mr. Damian Days, Sr., Mrs. Lacy Miller-Scott, Ms. Quatashia Witherspoon, and Dr. Jevauwn Smith.
